The Groton Public Schools Board of Education Ad Hoc Long-Term Space Planning Committee met on October 8, 2026, to discuss overcrowding and facility needs at Groton Middle School and potential space for the high school robotics program. Staff described shortages in classrooms, science and special education spaces, gym and cafeteria capacity, and concerns about crowded hallways and evacuation routes. Committee members discussed short- and long-term options, including portable or modular classrooms, using space at Fitch High School or other district properties, and a future building addition. No facility project or spending was approved; follow-up work will assess available space and options for the next meeting, scheduled for October 27.
The robotics discussion considered a preliminary modular-building concept for a practice field, including a 40-by-40-foot interior layout. A cost estimate of about $242,000 plus contingency was discussed for one concept; other metal-building estimates cited roughly $105,000–$107,000 for the structure alone, with a rough total around $350,000 after additional costs. The district has a $50,000 T-Mobile grant designated for a robotics practice field, and members also discussed possible grants, fundraising, and Electric Boat sponsorship. The committee agreed to seek an architect’s assessment and cost estimate, but did not authorize a contract or expenditure. Minutes from a prior meeting were approved; no procurement award or bid approval occurred.
