The City of Charlotte Economic Development and Workforce Committee held a special-call meeting on October 9, 2026, to reconsider its Opportunity Zones 2.0 census-tract recommendations after the North Carolina Department of Commerce identified five additional eligible tracts and requested a response by that day. Staff explained that Opportunity Zone designation may encourage private investment through tax incentives but does not guarantee investment or provide federal grants; final designations remain subject to state and U.S. Treasury review. The city’s June submission included 14 tracts, 12 of which aligned with the county’s recommendations; the county’s separate non-overlapping recommendation was tract 58.29 in Pineville.
The committee approved a substitute motion to retain the June recommendations except for replacing District 5 tract 16.07 with a tract encompassing the Greater Eastland area, citing the area’s housing and economic needs and potential to attract investment. The committee discussed the newly eligible tracts and alignment with county priorities, but no contract awards, purchases, or public spending allocations were identified.
