At its October 7, 2026 meeting, the Elyria Board of Education discussed district finances and the proposed Issue 4 operating levy. The treasurer explained how rising property values and Ohio’s funding formula affect local and state revenue. District leaders said that without new funds, the district would need to reduce spending by about $8 million over two years; the proposed levy is 8.9 mills. Potential reductions presented included extracurricular programs, kindergarten hours, student supports, staffing, and course offerings. The mayor urged support for the levy. Educators also asked the board to establish a transparent process for the upcoming superintendent search, including educator representation and consideration of professional search assistance; no search firm or process was selected at this meeting.
The board approved, by motion, the treasurer’s action items, including a list of purchase orders, donations, and student activity-purpose statements. It also approved the superintendent’s action items, including a 2026–27 Special Olympics secretary-treasurer contract, a Hobart service agreement for food-service equipment, an AMN Healthcare occupational-therapy services agreement, a Kinetic sponsorship agreement, and renewal of the lease at 1843 Middle, used to store trucks and plows. No contract amounts were stated. The board also approved personnel items, including athletic supplemental contracts; no separate procurement vote or spending amount was specified for those items.
