10/14/26 Cultural Arts Commission

The Lawrence Cultural Arts Commission met on October 14, 2026. The commission discussed proposed revisions to the Community Arts Grant guidelines. The annual grant pool is $70,000, including $3,000 for $500 mini-grants, and the maximum individual grant is currently $10,000. Members generally supported retaining that cap and discussed encouraging applicants to request only the amount they need. They also considered reducing the sustainability scoring category from 15 points to 10 and adding clearer guidance, as well as drafting language about generative AI use in applications and project materials. No guideline changes were adopted: a motion to table the proposal for committee review before the November meeting was approved.

The commission also selected six recipients for the 2026 Phoenix Awards: Paul Pupillo, Cordelia Brown, Kent Smith, Deborah Woodall, Rutledge, Hong Zhang, and David Pertasnik. The chair recused herself because she was among the nominees; members chose to defer her eligibility until a future year over concerns about appearances, while noting that the guidelines do not formally bar sitting commissioners from receiving an award. No contracts or purchasing decisions were identified.
