The SoWashCo Schools Board held a workshop on October 8, 2026. The main procurement- and budget-related discussion concerned a planned $13 million in budget adjustments for the 2027–28 school year; the options presented were preliminary considerations, not recommendations or approved cuts. Potential measures included issuing an RFP for contracted transportation routes or contracting out all transportation, reducing facilities and maintenance services, and reviewing technology and other district spending. Staff plan to bring recommendations to the board in November. The preliminary 2025–26 financial update reported expenditures within 0.6% of budget and revenues within 1%; the district also described ongoing structural budget pressure and an $8 million projected deficit for 2026–27. No contracts, bids, or budget adjustments were approved at this workshop.
The board also reviewed implementation of its recently adopted AI policy, including safeguards and a process for vetting digital tools that considers privacy, terms of service, curriculum fit, support needs, and cost. Open-enrollment parameters for 2027–28 will be presented for a vote at a future meeting, with capacity limits tied to enrollment and program or school capacity. The superintendent reported that a remodeled, purchased facility for the Headwaters life-skills program replaced two leased spaces that had cost more than $400,000 in the prior year; this was a report on a completed decision, not a new procurement action. The board approved the meeting agenda and later voted to enter a closed session; no procurement-related vote was taken.
