State & Local
The City of Webster Groves Business Development Commission met on October 8, 2026. The City’s finance director explained how local sales taxes are distributed, including taxes that return directly to the city and pooled taxes whose distributions are based partly on population. He said Webster Groves receives more from some pooled taxes than it contributes, while noting that the county’s distribution formula has been difficult to verify and may be subject to an audit. The commission discussed a possible county use tax and a potential economic-development sales tax; the latter was estimated to generate about $1.44 million annually for the city. The city has deferred an education campaign on the use tax while awaiting the ballot outcome. The finance director agreed to provide historical aggregate sales-tax figures for the commission’s review.
Members also discussed funding a citywide marketing effort. Special business district funds remain under each district’s control, so a shared campaign would require the districts to approve and budget contributions individually. The commission considered coordinating its quarterly business coffees and after-hours events with the Chamber to broaden participation. The prior meeting’s minutes were approved. No contract awards, solicitations, purchasing decisions, or other procurement activity were identified; no spending-related vote was taken.
