The City of Independence, Missouri, Audit and Finance Committee met October 8, 2026. The committee reviewed the city’s investment portfolio, rental-ready program audit, workers’ compensation outlook, fund balances, and sales- and use-tax reports. The city’s $126.9 million fixed-income portfolio was managed primarily in U.S. Treasury securities and federal agencies. Members discussed a recently approved investment policy update aligning with Missouri state policy, including the option to invest a limited amount in commercial paper with maturities up to 180 days; staff said any new investment types would be used only when appropriate. No new investment purchase or procurement award was approved at this meeting.

The Finance Director reported that an audit-services RFP was being prepared for release by December, with selection of a firm for the next five to seven years, and that an insurance-broker RFP was due to close the following Monday before staff review of submissions. No RFP selections or related votes occurred. Financial updates also noted significant capital-improvement spending, including approximately $7 million plus another $3 million in CIP spending associated with ongoing fire-station work, and a prior-year Striker lease for cardiac monitors. The committee also discussed planned CityWorks reporting enhancements for rental inspections, workers’ compensation claims and safety procedures, and a future review of city fuel cards versus fuel sites.
