The Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education held its regular meeting on October 7, 2026. Staff recognized the Berkeley Pathway to Achieve Credentialed Teachers (BPACT) program, which supports classified employees pursuing teaching credentials, including in hard-to-fill areas such as special education and STEM. The program has produced 19 teachers, 12 of whom are currently employed by the district. Staff reported more than $140,000 in Berkeley Public Schools Fund contributions since 2020 and more than $400,000 awarded to the program overall, alongside state grant support and district recruitment-and-retention funding. No procurement award, bid approval, or new vendor contract was identified. The board approved the meeting agenda and later unanimously approved Resolution 27-008, issuing local assignment options for 2026–27; the resolution was not described as a purchasing action.

The main discussion was a staff presentation on classroom technology, student device use, and AI, following extensive public comment urging stronger restrictions and staff explanations of the district’s approach. The district reported that direct YouTube access was turned off for TK–8 students, that Google Classroom’s Gemini tools are disabled for student accounts, and that it is developing an AI policy while collecting technology-use data and reviewing internet filtering. Staff said ChatGPT and Claude were not currently blocked and described vendor approval and student-data privacy requirements for software that stores student data. The discussion produced no procurement vote or identified spending commitment; it did highlight ongoing policy and implementation work that may affect future technology use and vendor approval.
