The Uintah School District Board of Education held a work session and business meeting on October 7, 2026, in Naples, Utah. The board discussed a study of a possible Vernal Middle School closure and consolidation of seventh- and eighth-grade students, with declining enrollment and financial viability as key considerations. The district reported enrollment had fallen by about 450 students over three years, representing more than $2 million in funding, and outlined further analysis of capital and operating savings, building needs, transportation, staffing, food services, and technology costs. The board took no action on the proposed closure; public and stakeholder input and additional analysis are planned. Facilities discussions included a planned feasibility review for the Apex Center with VCBO architects, a forthcoming walk-through of district facilities, and maintenance projects. The high school track is nearing the end of its life, with resurfacing estimated at about $500,000; a recent runway/track repair was reviewed, and staff indicated the vendor had met the agreement’s terms. The district also expects delivery of replacement table and bench tops later in October. The clearinghouse, a building of just over 2,000 square feet, is to be prepared for public sale.
The finance committee discussed budget monitoring, monthly or more frequent meetings with principals, child nutrition inventory and expenditures, and controls for school fundraising. Some third-party fundraising services charge administrative fees of up to 40%; no vendor award or related purchase was approved at this meeting. The board reported that no contracts required board approval. It unanimously approved several policies on first or second reading, including child abuse and neglect reporting, impact aid, travel reimbursement, suicide prevention, conduct on school premises, and school conduct and discipline. The board also approved the consent calendar, including meeting minutes and the monthly financial update.
