The Lawrence Public Schools School Committee met on October 7, 2026. The CFO reported a goal of managing a balanced $318 million budget for fiscal year 2026–27, with spending monitored against student needs and district priorities. Three major facilities projects are being advanced with the city and the Massachusetts School Building Authority: roof replacements at Frost and South Lawrence East schools and replacement of approximately 858 windows at Arlington School. The city’s budget and finance subcommittee gave the projects a favorable recommendation, and a public hearing on funding is forthcoming; no final funding approval or contract award was reported. The district also plans to outfit additional schools with kitchens for scratch cooking, using funds set aside for that work.
Procurement-related next steps include beginning the competitive procurement process for student transportation vendors in spring 2027—earlier than usual—with the aim of securing competitive bids and simplifying contracts. The district also expects to post a bid within the next few weeks for a search firm to support community engagement and the superintendent search; a committee subcommittee will help oversee the process. No vendor selections or spending-related votes were reported. Staff parking costs were raised during public comment, and the committee said the issue would return for discussion and an update at its November meeting.
