The Little Rock School District’s LRSD Forward community meeting on September 30, 2026, focused on academic initiatives and the district’s projected budget shortfall. District leaders said the operating budget needs to be reduced by approximately $6–7 million for the next school year; they cited a projected deficit of about $4–5 million and a declining fund balance, which was reported at $11 million at the end of the prior fiscal year and projected to fall to about $7 million. Leaders described school closures as a difficult but possible response and said the school board would consider recommendations at an October meeting, identified as either October 15 or 29. No contract awards, vendor selections, bids, or purchasing actions were discussed.
Administrators presented two closure options: close Western Hills, Mabelvale Elementary, and McDermott; or replace Mabelvale with Watson. They said the options were selected partly to limit boundary changes and that converting the Mabelvale campus for younger students would require an estimated six to eight months of work. Community members raised concerns about disruption to students, special education and autism programs, transportation, and neighborhood communities, and suggested alternatives including pursuing additional funding, renting school facilities, and consolidating programs. District leaders said they would review community feedback, including a proposal to accommodate McDermott students at Williams, and continue longer-term planning with community participation.
