The City of Simi Valley Planning Commission held its October 7, 2026 meeting and unanimously approved Conditional Use Permit CUP-S-2025-15 for a transit center at 2969 Tapo Canyon Road. The city-initiated project includes eight bus bays, electric bus chargers, and a 5,275-square-foot solar canopy on a 1.31-acre site. Staff said state and local grant funds had been secured to fully fund the project; a public commenter cited a $7 million state grant with a June 30, 2027 spending deadline. No contract award, vendor selection, or procurement action was identified.

The commission found the project exempt from further review under CEQA’s Class 32 infill-development exemption. Approval included a condition requiring new on-site trees to be at least 24-inch-box size, and commissioners strongly recommended that staff investigate weather protection for passengers beneath the canopy. Public comments raised concerns about tree removal, bus activity, neighborhood impacts, and project size; staff described the transit center as improving bus and bicycle safety and said it would support existing service, with no immediate service expansion planned. The meeting also included public criticism of a separate East Cochran Street housing development, but no action on that project was taken.
