At the October 8, 2026 New Brunswick City Council meeting, members adopted the 2026 City Market budget. The executive director said increased sponsorship and grant revenue would support events, marketing, a sponsorship consultant and PR/marketing agency, and expanded security. In public comment, residents questioned security and police spending: approximately $260,000 had been spent in the prior year, and about $265,000 was projected for the coming year. City Market said the spending reflected expanded events and requests from downtown businesses; a detailed breakdown of police versus private security was not provided. Residents also raised questions about the security provider and library safety services.
Procurement and capital items included approval of a $476,578 contract with Aspen Landscaping Contract LLC for Mile Run Brook maintenance improvements, Phase I, intended to remove obstructions contributing to flooding; officials said Phase II was going out to bid. The council also considered contract amendments adding $100,000 to Track Rock Industries LLC for materials and $15,000 to a water-utility contractor for valves and related equipment, extended a fire-department radio-maintenance contract for up to $11,532, and approved additional funding of $15,000 for counsel on the firehouse project and $6,750 for New Jersey Mortgage Funding LLC. First-reading capital ordinances included appropriations of $750,000 and $2.25 million for city improvements and acquisitions; these were advanced for public hearing rather than finally adopted at this meeting. Resolutions generally received affirmative roll-call votes; one resolution was held at the city clerk’s request.
