The Waiʻanae Coast Neighborhood Board regular meeting was held October 7, 2026. The meeting did not have a quorum, and the board deferred its business items; no board votes, contract awards, bid approvals, or spending actions were identified. Hawaiian Electric presented its Critical Pole Hardening Program: up to 30 poles in Mākaha are targeted for upgrades in 2026, including 10 replacements already completed and five more planned along Farrington Highway in November–December. The utility described the work as part of a three-year effort expected to address more than 100 poles, with upgrades intended to reduce wildfire risk and improve grid resilience and access. No project dollar amount or contract number was provided. Asked whether project costs could affect consumer bills, the presenter said funding depends on the project and Public Utilities Commission approvals and offered to follow up with more detail. Residents also raised concerns about outage-related charges, vegetation management, construction impacts, and advance notice.
Other funding and infrastructure matters included a DHHL modular-housing pilot expected to award 24 project leases on October 24, including eight homes in the Waiʻanae area, and discussion of legislative funding needed to expand Waiʻanae High School programs at the boat harbor site. A representative reported that a GIA grant had been secured for a community project. The council office also reported that Bills 30 and 32 had passed, addressing public-park uses and park, recreation, and botanical-garden fees and rulemaking. These were updates rather than procurement approvals by the neighborhood board.
