The Charles County Public Schools Board of Education meeting on October 13, 2026, included a fiscal audit, budget matters, workforce updates, and public comment. The district’s auditor, CLA, reported a clean, unmodified opinion with no material weaknesses or significant deficiencies; the federal awards audit remains pending release of the federal compliance supplement. The general fund balance fell about $7.1 million, from $45.7 million to $38.6 million, and the auditor noted that reserves represented less than one month of operating costs. A budget item described roughly $73,000 for maintenance and capital work already underway, including fire-system, chiller, access-control, HVAC, auditorium, parking-lot, classroom, and fuel-tank projects. The presentation also described $1,132,630 in community-schools funding and $33,972 for workforce development, and clarified that use of fund balance in the FY2027 plan is not new recurring revenue or a request for additional county appropriation. No contract award or vendor selection was identified.
The board also received an update on Maryland’s Time to Care paid-family-leave program. CCPS is evaluating participation in the state plan versus a private plan and is awaiting rates from a collaborative process following RFPs; no plan, contribution structure, or vendor was selected. Workforce discussion highlighted reduced teacher vacancies and attrition, recruitment and substitute-cost controls, and state grants of just over $2 million and $1.5 million for teacher apprenticeship and alternative licensure programs. Public comments focused on retiree health-plan options, accessibility accommodations, literacy instruction, and student safety. The board discussed future presentations on special-education data and assessment changes, and approved meeting minutes and other listed board actions; no procurement award vote was reported.
