NIH grant awarded to University of Michigan to study neural circuits regulating REM sleep using advanced sequencing and neural recording techniques.
Description
This project aims to identify markers and functions of specific neurons that regulate REM sleep at the level of the vlPAG/LPT-SLD. The research will focus on transcriptionally- and circuit-defined vlPAG/LPT neurons modulated by projections from arousal and reward centers, specifically from the locus coeruleus (LC) and nucleus accumbens (NAc). Cutting-edge spatial sequencing and in vivo neural recordings will be used to identify the transcriptional profile of neurons that suppress REM sleep. The project will also investigate the connectivity, activity, and function of afferents from LC and NAc in modulating REM sleep phenomena through electrophysiology, circuit-specific recording, and manipulation.
