Description
Chronic inflammation and the resulting autoxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids to lipid electrophiles form deleterious protein post-translational modifications and are major drivers of many human diseases. The research program will use a model cell system, Staphylococcus aureus, to characterize polyunsaturated fatty acid autoxidation in cells, elucidate the molecular determinants of lipid electrophile formation, and identify the protein targets of lipid electrophiles. These studies will define the molecular interactions in cells that drive diseases associated with inflammation and validate targets for future therapies to treat and prevent these diseases.
