Description
This project aims to describe objectively quantifiable metrics of gait and balance impairment in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and determine the underlying mechanisms using advanced neuroimaging. The work will improve understanding of PSP, identify those at risk for falls, and evaluate treatments to reduce death and disability from falls. The project will utilize laboratory-based motion capture and body-worn motion sensing devices to identify gait metrics that characterize PSP syndromes and distinguish PSP from controls. It will correlate gait and balance metrics with volumetric MRI, diffusion MRI, and tractography to analyze neurobiological mechanisms. The study will also assess the impact of sex and age on gait abnormalities. Future directions include longitudinal assessment and comparative analysis across neurodegenerative diseases to develop patient-centric outcome measures for clinical trials.
