The project aims to develop machine learning methods to analyze retinal ganglion cell responses in mouse models to assess and improve vision restoration techniques such as stem-cell replacement, optogenetics, and small molecule photoswitches.

Description

This project describes a novel system that analyzes, by machine learning, retinal ganglion cell output in native, degenerated, and therapeutically treated blind retinas. This system can characterize the visual information content of the ‘reanimated’ blind retina and facilitate the development of these technologies. The system developed through this grant, as well as the career development pursued by the investigator, will be applicable to the assessment of potential retinal acuity restoration by current and novel therapeutic approaches.
