Description

This project aims to elucidate signaling mechanisms of diminished innervation, cellular mechanisms of oxidative adaptation, and the contribution of remaining muscle to whole-body metabolism to improve regenerative rehabilitation outcomes. It addresses large scale, traumatic orthopedic injuries such as volumetric muscle loss (VML) which cause lifelong limitations in daily function, long-term dysfunction, reduced mobility, co-morbidities, and often delayed amputation. Current rehabilitation strategies are insufficient, and understanding the cellular and metabolic mechanisms in remaining muscle tissue is critical.
