NIH grant awarded to University of Maryland Baltimore to study genetic and molecular bases of pigmentation disorders, aiming to identify novel genes and develop therapies.

Description

The "Molecular Determinants of Pigmentation (MDoP)" study aims to identify and characterize new genes and proteins essential for pigmentation development, melanosomes transportation, function, and maintenance in humans. The study focuses on pigmentation disorders such as albinism, including syndromic and nonsyndromic forms, with the goal to understand mechanisms and develop therapeutic agents. The research uses genetic, molecular, biochemical, psychophysical, and cell biology techniques in humans and zebrafish models.
