Description

This is a renewal application for Years 36-40 of an Institutional Training Program (T32) in Pediatric Gastroenterology (GI) at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas. The program aims to produce independent investigators at the cutting edge of research in pediatric GI. Since 2010, 69% of the 39 T32 graduates are in academic positions, with 53% engaged in research and 36% having received NIH K-level career development awards. The program supports MD and PhD postdoctoral trainees for up to 3 years, with 5 stipends per year. Trainees benefit from the institutional research environment and advanced technical core facilities. The program operates in synergy with the NIDDK-funded P30 Digestive Disease Center, leveraging faculty expertise and core facilities. The training faculty includes 23 Established Mentors and 10 Early Career Mentors from multiple departments. Trainees are selected from a highly competitive applicant pool. The program includes rotations, protected research time, individual oversight committees, and eligibility for advanced coursework leading to a Master of Science degree or Certificate of Added Qualification in Clinical Research. Trainees attend weekly courses, seminars, journal clubs, and social events. The program emphasizes rigorous education, mentorship, and translational GI research.
