The award funds research to investigate therapeutic approaches targeting cholesterol homeostasis to treat demyelinating eye diseases, which can cause irreversible vision loss.

Description

This project aims to explore whether restoring cholesterol homeostasis can be therapeutic in demyelinating eye disease by promoting neuroprotective and reparative mechanisms. Demyelinating eye diseases are a broad spectrum of pathologies affecting the optic nerve that can result in irreversible loss of visual function. Cholesterol is vital for CNS development and function and dysregulation of its homeostasis is associated with neuropathology, including eye disease.
