The award supports research on Cornus officinalis as a potential therapeutic to inhibit type 1 diabetes by promoting pancreatic β-cell survival through Nrf2 pathway activation.

Description

This project aims to determine the clinical efficacy of Cornus officinalis (CO) in promoting pancreatic β-cell survival via promotion of Nrf2 and autophagy, stimulating antioxidant pathways, and inhibiting onset of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in the non-obese diabetic (NOD) mouse. The research includes elucidating the biological mechanism of CO to be utilized as a therapeutic option for T1D interventional therapy.
