ARCH REACH Administrative Core

The ARCH REACH Administrative Core is a center grant funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism to coordinate and oversee research on the intersection of HIV and unhealthy alcohol use. Led by the University of Washington, it supports multiple research cores and projects, ensuring collaboration, regulatory compliance, and dissemination of findings to address NIH priorities.

Description

This new center grant application for the Alcohol Research Consortium on HIV Center for Research at the Intersection of Equity, Alcohol and HIV (ARCH REACH) is the culmination of thirteen years of NIAAA funding and scientific productivity at the intersection of HIV and unhealthy alcohol use (UAU). ARCH REACH is integrated into CNICS, a well-established, scientifically productive, national HIV clinical cohort of ten academically-affiliated HIV primary care sites and over 48,000 PWH in the US. ARCH REACH consists of three Cores, coordinated at partnering university sites--the Administrative Core (AC; University of Washington [UW]), the Methods Core (UW), and Dissemination Core (Tulane University)—and three Epidemiology/Intervention Arms (Projects)—the Epidemiological Research Arm (ERA; UW), Telephone-Based Brief Alcohol Intervention (T-BAI; UW) and the Syndemic Conditions Treatment Arm (STAR; University of California San Diego and University of Miami). The Administrative Core facilitates the overarching P60 scientific goals, and the project aims of ARCH REACH cores and projects, and ensures synergy across components by providing infrastructure, oversight, coordination and scientific direction. The AC administrative structure includes: A Steering Committee, Project Work Groups, a Program Advisory Committee (PAC); and a Transdisciplinary Community Partner Board (TCPB) (that includes community stakeholders including persons with HIV (PWH) with diverse lived experiences). The aims of the AC are to: 1) Optimize communication, collaboration, integration, and synergy among ARCH REACH Cores, components, and investigators, CNICS, other NIAAA-funded alcohol/HIV program projects, the PAC, the TCPB, and our funding agency; 2) Monitor and ensure adherence to project regulatory requirements, milestones, and quality control in the implementation of the ARCH REACH epidemiologic and interventional arms; 3) Oversee coordination of ARCH REACH resources among the research projects and with outside groups; 4) Promote scientific participation and career development of junior investigators and students, particularly those new to the field of HIV and/or alcohol through mentoring and training; and 5) Support collaborative working between ARCH REACH Cores, ERA, T-BAI and STAR, and the TCPB creating innovative and dynamic partnerships for collecting, examining, and interpreting findings. The AC uses multiple well-established administrative processes for monitoring project milestones and quality control, overseeing resource allocation and coordination, ensuring regulatory compliance, mentoring students and junior faculty, and disseminating new knowledge in collaboration with the dissemination core through publications, presentations, educational programs and a project website. ARCH REACH AC is led by experts in alcohol and HIV with experience administering large research programs. The ARCH REACH administrative core synergizes the proposed epidemiological, intervention and implementation research critical to address NIH and End the HIV Epidemic priorities.
