This project funded by the National Institute on Aging focuses on studying fracture risk and changes in peripheral bone in older men through continued follow-up and advanced imaging techniques to improve fracture prediction and understand bone microarchitecture changes.
Description
We aim to leverage the unique advantages of MrOS in the next phase of this project in order to characterize the circumstances of fracture in the oldest old; improve fracture prediction using CT-FEA; and identify determinants of change in peripheral bone microarchitecture. To do this, we will continue follow-up of the MrOS cohort and repeat skeletal health assessments (HR-pQCT) in a subset of surviving participants. The study is a prospective, ongoing investigation of risk factors for osteoporotic fractures in older men, with extensive bone imaging and long-term follow-up. The project supports continued follow-up for fractures, falls, mobility limitations, and death; repeat HR-pQCT scans; and maintains study infrastructure for communication, publications, and data sharing.
