Description
The goal of the Developmental Core is to develop the next generation of HIV researchers in Washington, DC, supporting the DC CFAR mission to end the HIV epidemic and improve health and quality of life for persons with HIV. Led by a multi-institutional team of senior HIV investigators, the core covers basic to clinical to social and behavioral science research, with expertise in virology, immunology, pharmacology, physiology, adolescent medicine, and sociology. Since 2015, the core has reviewed 147 research applications and funded 69 projects totaling $3.2M. Past pilot awards have resulted in significant NIH grant funding, with an 881% return on investment. The core's specific aims include leading pilot award programs for early-stage and transitioning HIV investigators, implementing mentoring and training programs, and providing educational and networking activities to promote multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaboration. Programs include traditional pilot awards, transitioning investigator awards, academic-community partnership awards, rapid response awards for emerging infectious diseases, and microgrants. Support services include grant writing workshops, mentoring, research seminars, and webinars.
