Description

THE GREAT DEBATERS IS AN 8 -WEEK WORKSHOP designed to introduce teens ages 13 -17 to the exciting world of courtroom debate, public speaking, critical thinking, and legal advocacy. Participants will kick off the program by watching the inspiring film The Great Debaters (PG-13), which explores themes of perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and the power of persuasive speech. In this workshop, participants will assume the roles of attorneys, witnesses, plaintiffs, defendants, jurors, and legal strategists while working through fictional court cases. They will learn how to analyze evidence, build persuasive arguments, question witnesses, and think critically under pressure. Participants will study one of two featured cases: Seen Without Permission ? a case involving student privacy, texting, and constitutional rights. One Inch Too Far ? a case involving amusement park safety, responsibility, and personal accountability. Through collaborative practice sessions, teams will carefully review case materials, witness statements, evidence, legal arguments, develop their opening statements and closing arguments. The workshop will culminate in a mock trial competition where teams will present their cases before a judge and jury panel. Teams will be scored on their preparation, legal reasoning, presentation skills, teamwork, and ability to persuade the jury. The team earning the highest score will be recognized as the winning team and earn a prize. Teams are 8-10 members. 27780, EHQ, ASNS, DYD_SPOT, L009
