Research project funded by the National Eye Institute to study sigma-1 receptor's role in protecting retinal cells in glaucoma, aiming to develop neuroprotective treatments.
Description
This project investigates the mechanisms by which the small protein sigma-1 receptor (S1R) regulates protein secretion from optic nerve head astrocytes (ONHAs) to protect retinal ganglion cell (RGC) axons in glaucoma. The study aims to inform how drugs such as S1R agonists can be used for neuroprotection and to identify new therapeutic targets within the astrocyte secretome.
