The award funds a project to develop a cellularly-validated neuroimaging atlas of hippocampal subfields to advance understanding and treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Description

This project aims to generate a histologically-validated map of twelve hippocampal subregions for neuroimaging, a critical step towards understanding Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis and developing therapeutic interventions. The project will use a cell-based approach from histology to create a cellularly-validated atlas in FreeSurfer, which will be applied to existing in vivo datasets. The work involves high-resolution ex vivo MRI, histological validation with Nissl staining, and application to in vivo MRI data from studies such as the Harvard Aging Brain Study, the Human Connectome Project, and the Alzheimer’s Disease Neuroimaging Initiative.
