Development of a lifestyle physical activity intervention to reduce risk for perinatal cannabis use

NIH funded project to develop and pilot-test a physical activity intervention using Fitbit and counseling to reduce prenatal cannabis use among pregnant women at high risk, including pilot trials to assess feasibility and efficacy.

Description

This project aims to develop a lifestyle physical activity (LPA) intervention to help pregnant women at high risk for prenatal cannabis use (CU) reduce their use by providing an alternative coping strategy for managing distress and physical symptoms during pregnancy. The intervention will incorporate activity monitors (e.g., Fitbit) and brief counseling to facilitate goal-setting and monitoring. The study will include an intervention development phase with a small open pilot trial (N=20), followed by a pilot randomized controlled trial (RCT) (N=50) comparing the LPA+Fitbit condition to a Fitbit-only condition. Outcomes such as CU, physical activity, and other health indicators will be assessed at multiple points extending to 4 weeks postpartum. If feasible and acceptable, the intervention's efficacy will be evaluated in a larger, fully-powered trial.
