Exploiting differences in HPV oncoprotein function among oropharyngeal cancers to personalize therapy

This award funds research to personalize therapy for HPV-induced oropharyngeal cancers by studying viral protein differences that affect cancer progression and treatment response, aiming to reduce toxicity and improve outcomes.

Description

Human papilloma virus-induced cancers of the throat are becoming much more common, and difficulty distinguishing easily curable cases from more serious ones prevents tailoring treatment to be adequately effective but not unnecessarily toxic for each individual patient. This project explores how differences in the levels of a particular viral protein within each cancer influence how quickly it spreads and how well it responds to treatment. This effort will help minimize treatment toxicity for easily curable patients while helping to identify more effective therapies for the most serious cases.
