NIH awarded a Hematology Training grant to the University of Washington to provide post-doctoral research training in hematology, focusing on both basic and clinical research, with strong mentorship and a high success rate for trainees.
Description
This NIH-funded Hematology Research Training Program at the University of Washington and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center aims to provide intensive post-doctoral research training in investigative hematology. The program emphasizes cell and molecular biology, with strengths in stem cells, hematopoiesis, thrombosis, hemostasis, sickle cell disease, marrow failure, hematologic malignancies, immunotherapy, gene therapy, and hematopoietic cell transplantation. Clinical research and outcomes investigation are also supported. The goal is to develop research, presentation, and grant-writing skills to establish independent research careers and train future leaders in academic hematology. Trainees typically have MD, MD/PhD, or PhD degrees, and are selected through an application process. The program offers two years of funding from the T32 grant, with opportunities for longer training under other mechanisms. Training is monitored through regular research presentations, meetings, and evaluations. The program boasts a 95% success rate of trainees pursuing careers in academic medicine or industry research. Strengths include diverse research opportunities, prominent faculty, mentorship, inclusion of underrepresented minorities, didactic sessions, and a long history of successful training.
