Description

This is a renewal application for the Harvard Summer Research Program in Kidney Medicine (HSRPKM) which provides a hands-on experience for talented undergraduate students to establish and build upon their interest in kidney and urology research. The program offers an intensive, hypothesis-driven, mentored research experience, with projects mentored by investigators at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, or Massachusetts General Hospital. The program includes a weekly core curriculum covering kidney biology, renal physiology, pathology, community screening, outpatient dialysis, clinical observation, and research contributions to therapeutic approaches. Students present their work at the NIDDK-KUH Summer Research symposium. The program has close ties with the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP), with alumni starting 17 chapters. A year-round mentorship, career development, and networking program helps sustain interest in nephrology and urology. An Advisory Committee oversees the program, focusing on recruitment, retention, and evaluation to optimize the trainee experience.
