This award funds research to study how social connection affects suicide risk among young adults transitioning to college, using smartphone data and self-reports to inform prevention strategies.
Description
The proposed research will address a significant health concern, the rise of suicide rates among young adults, by leveraging innovative technology to pair daily-level self-reports with continuously collected smartphone data (i.e., screenshots, GPS) to better understand the impact of social connection on suicidal thoughts and behaviors during a high-risk period, the transition to college. The results will provide insights into suicide risk and protective factors across different dimensions, and how these relationships evolve during a key developmental period. The study aims to enhance identification of critical suicide risk targets, enabling better prevention and intervention efforts to reduce suffering and mortality.
