Description
Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a valvular heart disease caused by the Strep A bacteria that affects over 40 million people, most of whom live in low-resource settings. Regular administration of injectable antibiotics can improve outcomes for children with the earliest forms of RHD, but we do not know if oral antibiotics (which are more practical) can do the same. This study (GOALIE) will determine the effectiveness of injectable as compared to oral antibiotics and measure the costs, impact on quality of life, and patient and parent satisfaction of both approaches.
