Description
The overall goal of this research is to better define the mechanisms by which airway mucosal irritation is transduced into airway defensive reflexes such as cough and bronchospasm. The study focuses on the role of brush cells in the airway epithelium and the actions of transmitters and mediators released by these cells. The research aims to characterize activation mechanisms of brush cells, how they transmit signals to sensory nerves, and the role of ATP and carbonic anhydrase in transducing airway mucosal irritation.
