Description
Central pattern generator (CPG) networks underlying important rhythmic behaviors such as breathing, chewing, swallowing, and locomotion must adapt to physiological and environmental challenges to maintain health and a high quality of life. The proposed project will use a small, well-defined CPG to identify novel cellular-level mechanisms that determine which nervous system regions generate rhythmic activity in order to adapt to changing demands. Greater understanding of the flexibility of CPG networks can lead to treatment for disruptions in rhythmic behaviors caused by neurological disorders and stroke-induced damage in CPGs or their inputs.
