The award funds research at Vanderbilt University Medical Center to develop a prognostic tool predicting recovery of communication in patients with acute disorders of consciousness using multimodal data. The project aims to improve clinical decision-making and support recovery-focused interventions.

Description

This project aims to identify multimodal neurobiological predictors of recovery in patients with acute disorders of consciousness admitted to intensive care units at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The study integrates behavioral, blood biomarker, neuroimaging, and electroencephalographic metrics to predict recovery of communication, a valued patient-centered milestone. The project pursues three aims: identifying acute phenotypes and endotypes predicting 6-month communication recovery, comparing the prediction model to existing clinical prognoses, and surveying clinicians to optimize neuroprognostic tool implementation. The findings aim to support evidence-based withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment decisions and facilitate prognostic tool development and targeted therapies.
