A pilot study to test the feasibility of Ewing amputation in Veterans with peripheral arterial disease undergoing below knee amputation, aiming to improve ambulation and reduce complications compared to standard amputation.

Description

This proposal will test the feasibility of Ewing amputation (EA) in Veterans in a phase 1 pilot study. If feasible, a randomized clinical trial will test whether EA improves ambulation compared to standard transtibial below knee amputation. The study focuses on Veterans undergoing major amputation due to diabetes and/or peripheral arterial disease, aiming to improve outcomes such as pain, balance, and quality of life.
