This award funds research to improve assessment of bone quality and fracture risk using OsteoProbe technology, aiming to validate its predictive ability for bone strength and support FDA approval.
Description
Most patients who fracture have non-osteoporotic bone mineral density. One cause of fragility in these patients is poor bone quality that contributes to higher risk for fracture. OsteoProbe® Reference Point Indenter enables measurement of bone quality in human patients and quantifies bone material quality as bone material strength index (BMSi). This project aims to confirm the predictive relationship between OsteoProbe measurements at the tibia and bone strength at clinically relevant skeletal sites on male cadavers, develop OsteoProbe into a more manufacturable device, and provide pivotal data for FDA 510(k) approval of a new marketing claim.
