This award funds research to rejuvenate aged hematopoietic stem cells by enhancing a newly discovered signaling pathway, aiming to develop therapies to improve blood system function and reduce age-related hematopoietic disorders.

Description

The aging process directly leads to a multitude of diseases that affect nearly all systems of the body, including blood system. We have discovered a candidate rejuvenation signaling pathway and we intend to test whether enhancing this signaling axis can restore the functional capacity of an aging blood system. These studies will lay the foundation for the development of therapeutic strategies to rejuvenate the aged blood stem cell and to reduce the morbidity and mortality associated with myelosuppression used to treat a wide range of age-related hematopoietic disorders.
