Award to University of California Los Angeles for the Structural and Functional Visualization Core at UCLA IDDRC, providing advanced imaging services and technology development for research on intellectual and developmental disabilities affecting nervous system development. The project supports translational research linking MRI and cellular imaging.
Description
The Structural and Functional Visualization Core provides comprehensive imaging services to the members of UCLA Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC), working on any aspect of the genetic and environmentally-induced developmental diseases affecting nervous system development and function. The research spans basic scientists using reductionist approaches to elucidate mechanisms specific to intellectual developmental disabilities (IDDs) to clinicians assessing therapeutic interventions. The core offers access to light microscopy cores, MRI facilities, and technical support for imaging analysis. It develops new technologies such as smaller, lighter one-photon miniaturized fluorescent microscopes for live neural imaging in freely moving animals and refines tissue transparency protocols like CLARITY and iDISCO. These techniques enable holistic imaging approaches, translating mechanisms into therapies by correlating MRI findings with in vivo Ca2+ imaging and light microscopy.
