Research project funded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute to develop AI and deep learning methods for estimating coronary artery calcium in patients without prior cardiovascular disease, aiming to improve screening and treatment strategies.

Description

This project aims to utilize artificial intelligence and deep learning algorithms to estimate coronary artery calcium (CAC) in patients without prior atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). The study will validate and adapt existing deep learning models to contrast-enhanced CT scans, describe the epidemiology of CAC in a diverse population, and test notification strategies to improve statin prescription rates while minimizing patient anxiety. The research is conducted within Kaiser Permanente Northern California, serving over 4.5 million members with broad racial and ethnic diversity.
