This award funds the development of a flexible carbon fiber penetrating nerve cuff and cortical array to improve neural recording, stimulation, and neurochemical detection, aiming to reduce tissue damage and enhance biocompatibility for neurological disorder research.

Description

Penetrating electrodes for electrophysiology recording and stimulation are critical to understanding neurological disorders and mental health conditions. Current multichannel electrodes made of metal or silicon cause substantial damage, evoke immune responses, and often move from the target area. Carbon Fiber (CF) offers solutions with high biocompatibility, minimal insertion damage, outstanding single-unit recording, and high charge capacity. The project aims to develop a flexible, 3D, carbon fiber penetrating array with a flexible interface connecting CFs to electronics, enhancing conformability and reducing tissue damage. Research objectives include modifying Spike Neuro surface arrays to create vias for CF insertion and securing, developing custom lithography masks for array optimization, and performing ex vivo testing in retina to evaluate conformability and electrophysiology performance.
