Description
The Charleston Alcohol Research Center (ARC) focuses on treatment and treatment implications related to alcohol use disorder. It employs a multidisciplinary, translational research approach involving clinical and preclinical researchers investigating the transition from social drinking to excessive, uncontrolled drinking. The research aims to understand brain mechanisms and circuits involved in decision-making that facilitate this transition, with the goal of developing effective therapeutic strategies. The ARC comprises four research projects and three cores, including leadership, scientific services, and pilot projects. The projects focus on neuroadaptations in cortical circuitry mediating excessive alcohol consumption, utilizing cellular/molecular biology techniques, behavioral procedures, and brain stimulation paradigms such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The project also employs multimodal neuroimaging and transdiagnostic assessment instruments to evaluate the efficacy of neurocircuit-targeted TMS treatments. The center aims to continue its leadership role by fostering multidisciplinary research, attracting new investigators, and providing training opportunities for the next generation of researchers.
