This NIH-funded project led by Dr. Michele Buonora studies patient-controlled analgesia for acute pain in hospitalized patients with opioid use disorder, focusing on effectiveness, safety, and implementation at two NYC hospitals over five years.

Description

A five-year mentored research and career development plan to establish Dr. Michele Buonora as an independent clinician investigator using implementation science to develop, test, and disseminate interventions to improve outcomes for people with opioid use disorder (POUD) and pain. The study examines the safety, effectiveness, and implementation of patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) for acute pain in hospitalized POUD patients at two large teaching hospitals in NYC, comparing outcomes such as opioid overdose, sedation, falls, pain intensity, patient satisfaction, and self-discharge. It also aims to identify determinants of PCA implementation, barriers, and facilitators through interviews with patients, clinicians, and stakeholders.
