Research Education Component

The Research Education Component (REC) at NYU ADRC is a comprehensive training program aimed at developing future investigators in Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). It offers multidisciplinary education, mentoring, and professional development, leveraging partnerships within NYU and other institutions. The program supports a diverse group of trainees and emphasizes research ethics and networking to foster successful careers in AD/ADRD research.

Description

Research education has long been a core mission of the NYU ADRC and is formalized in the Center’s Research Education Component (REC). The REC builds on the extensive experience of numerous NYU-ADRC-affiliated researchers/clinicians and educators, who nurture the careers of future AD/ADRD investigators and advance the ADRC’s thematic focus by training scientists to both dissect sources of heterogeneity in AD/ADRD and to map disease transitions as AD/ADRD progresses. The program takes advantage of the NYU ADRC cores’ long history of training clinician scientists to become successful, productive investigators. It includes partnerships in population sciences and aging research at the NYU School of Global Public Health, the NYU School of Medicine’s Department of Population Health, along with NYU’s Schools of Nursing and Social Work. The REC program complements institutional T32/K12 offerings by recruiting a scientifically promising group of NYU ADRC REC Scholars, Junior Scholars, and Affiliates and centering their training on access to the many resources offered by the NYU ADRC. All trainees receive extensive education in AD/ADRD research, professional development, informal group mentoring, individualized and comprehensive research mentoring, and funding for professional development expenses such as travel to meetings. The program also includes short courses in Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) and maintains close ties with former trainees to provide a network for all trainees. The REC specific aims include recruitment and selection of outstanding scientists and promising trainees, providing broad multi-disciplinary training and mentoring, establishing and fostering partnerships to enhance research training in AD/ADRD, and evaluating the effectiveness of the NYU ADRC REC program for continued enhancement and refinement of the training mission.
