This NIH-funded project studies how ER-shaping proteins affect the morphology and function of the endoplasmic reticulum in the malaria parasite Plasmodium, aiming to understand their role in parasite development and host interaction.

Description

The project aims to determine the contributions of putative Plasmodium ER-shaping proteins in shaping the ER of erythrocytic and hepatic stages of Plasmodium, using morphological and ultrastructural studies of P. berghei gene-knockouts. It will also determine the effect of their loss on protein trafficking in the parasite, providing a causal link between ER architecture, protein trafficking, and the malaria parasite's ability to reside in different host environments.
