Research grant awarded to New York University School of Medicine to study extrachromosomal DNA in cancer, aiming to understand its role in tumor growth and treatment resistance and develop new therapeutic strategies.
Description
eDyNAmiC (extrachromosomal DNA in Cancer) investigates how circular, extrachromosomal pieces of DNA (ecDNA) contribute to aggressive tumor growth and treatment resistance in cancer. ecDNA can carry oncogenes at higher levels than chromosomal DNA, evade normal inheritance rules, and alter gene regulation, making cancers with ecDNA particularly difficult to treat. The project aims to understand ecDNA formation, function, movement, evolution, and potential as a drug target by integrating cancer genomics, yeast genetics, epigenomics, artificial genome synthesis, patient tracking, machine learning, mathematical modeling, immunobiology, and chemistry. The goal is to develop novel insights and therapeutic strategies to target ecDNA-containing cancers.
